Gelehrter, geb. 1818 zu Kenmure bei Glasgow, [* 2] ward im Trinity College zu Cambridge gebildet, lebte längere Zeit in Frankreich und Spanien, [* 3] ward 1866 durch den Tod seines Onkels John Maxwell Baronet, 1872 Rektor der Universität Edinburg, [* 4] 1875 Kanzler der Universität Glasgow sowie Kommissar am Britischen Museum und an der National-Porträtgalerie. Er starb in Venedig. [* 5] S. schrieb: »The annals of the artists of Spain« (1848, 3 Bde.; 2. Aufl. 1853);
»Cloister-life of Charles V.« (1852; deutsch, Leipz. 1853) und »Velasquez and his works« (1855; deutsch, Berl. 1856). ¶
