Bethlehem (New York), ward Ingenieur, stellte mit Davis Untersuchungen über die alten Denkmäler im Mississippithal
an, worüber er in »The ancient monuments of the Mississippi valley« (Washingt. 1848) berichtete, und ward 1849 zum Geschäftsträger
der Union in den zentralamerikanischen Republiken ernannt, welche Staaten er ebenfalls (wiederholt 1853) zu wissenschaftlichen
Zwecken erforschte.
Später besuchte er Europa, war 1863-64 Kommissar der Union in Peru, 1868 Generalkonsul für Honduras in New York
und wurde 1871 Präsident des Anthropological Institute daselbst. Er starb 17. April 1888 in New York. Von seinen Schriften sind

Bethlehem im Staate Neuyork, untersuchte mit Davis die alten Denkmäler im Mississippithal, wurde 1849 Geschäftsträger der
Vereinigten Staaten in Guatemala und Nicaragua, wo er mit Erfolg den Versuchen der Engländer, die Grenzen ihres Schutzgebietes
Mosquitia auf Kosten Nicaraguas auszudehnen, entgegentrat. Von 1863 bis 1864 war S. Kommissar der Union
in Peru und wurde 1871 Präsident des Anthropological Institute in Neuyork, wo er 17. April 1888 starb. Er veröffentlichte u. a.:
