William Gilmore, nordamerikan. Dichter und Schriftsteller, geb. zu Charleston in Südcarolina, studierte Rechtswissenschaft und ward 1828 Advokat, gab aber diese Stellung auf, um die Redaktion eines politischen Blattes zu übernehmen, und lebte darauf bis 1832 zu New York, seitdem wieder in seiner Vaterstadt, woselbst er starb. S. war ein äußerst fruchtbarer Autor, von reicher Phantasie und scharfer Beobachtungsgabe. Seine Schriften, die eine ganze Bibliothek ausmachen, umfassen Poesien (»Lyrical poems«, 1827; »The tricolor«, 1830; »Atalantis«, 1832, seine vorzüglichste Dichtung; »Southern passages and pictures«, 1839; »Grouped thoughts and scattered fancies«, 1845; »Areytos, songs of the South«, 1846; »Lays of the palmetto«, 1848; »The city of the silent«, 1851; »Poems«, 1854, 2 Bde.; »War-poetry of the South«, 1867 u. a.),
Dramen (»Norman Maurice« und »Michael Bonhum«),
eine Reihe von Romanen, welche in chronologischer Folge Darstellungen zur politischen und zur Kulturgeschichte Nordamerikas bis zum Beginn des 19. Jahrh. bilden (darunter: »The Yemassee«, 1835; »Confession, or the blind heart«, 1841; »The Lily and the Totem«, 1845; »Katherine Walton«, 1851; »The Cassique of Kiawah«, 1859, u. a.),
und andre Erzählungen (»The wigwam and the cabin«, 1845; »The book of my lady«, 1853; »A tale of the crescent city«, 1866, u. a.). Außerdem veröffentlichte S. eine »History of the South Carolina« (2. Aufl., New York 1859); »Egeria, or thoughts and counsel for the way side« sowie mehrere biographische Werke (z. B. über John Smith, 1846; Nathaniel Greene, 1849). Auch gab er »A supplement to Shakespeare« (Philadelphia [* 2] 1848) heraus, welches sieben dem Dichter fälschlich zugeschriebene Dramen, wie »The Puritan« etc., enthält. Gesammelt erschienen seine Werke 1882 in 10 Bänden, illustrierte Ausg. 1886, 17 Bde. Sein Leben beschrieb Cable (Boston [* 3] 1888).
