1) George, engl. Novellist, geb. 1828 in Hampshire, wurde zum Teil in Deutschland [* 2] erzogen und trat 1851 mit einem Band [* 3] Gedichte (»Poems«) auf, dem das burleske Gedicht in Prosa: »The shaving of Shagpat« (1856, 3. Aufl. 1871) und »Farina«, die Bearbeitung einer genial-unsinnigen Kölner [* 4] Sage, folgte. Von seinen zahlreichen Romanen sind zu nennen: »The ordeal of Richard Feverel« (1859),
Erziehungsfragen behandelnd;
»Evan Harrington« (1861);
»Rhoda Fleming« (1865);
»Vittoria« (1867);
»The adventures of Harry Richmond« (1871);
»Beauchamp's career« (1875);

Außerdem veröffentlichte er: »Modern love and poems of the English roadside« (1862) und »The tragic comedians« (1881, eine Satire auf Lassalle);
ferner: »Poems and lyrics of the joys of earth« (1883) und »Ballads and poems of tragic life« (1887).
