William Edward Hartpole, engl. Geschichtschreiber, geb. bei Dublin, wo er im Trinity College studierte. Anonym hatte er die histor.-polit. Schrift «The leaders of public opinion in Ireland» (Lond. 1861; 2. Aufl. 1872) veröffentlicht. Seinen Ruf begründete die «History of the rise and influence of the spirit of rationalism in Europe» (2 Bde., 1865; 5. Aufl. 1872; deutsch von H. Jolowicz, 2. Aufl., Lpz. 1873). Später folgten «History of European morals from Augustus to Charlemagne» (2 Bde., 1869; 3. Aufl. 1877; deutsch, 2. Aufl., Lpz. 1879),
