Rechtsgelehrter und Staatsmann, geb. zu Alderley in der englischen Grafschaft Gloucester, ward Sachwalter unter Karl I., 1652 Sergeant at law, 1653 Judge of common pleas, 1671 von Karl II. zum Lord-Oberrichter an der Kingsbench ernannt, starb und schrieb unter anderm: »History of the common law of England« (Lond. 1713, 6. Ausg. 1820);
»Moral and religious works« (hrsg. von Thirlwall, das. 1805, 2 Bde.).
