Rufus Wilmot, nordamerikan. Schriftsteller, geb. zu Benson in Vermont, studierte Theologie und wurde Baptistenprediger, widmete sich dann aber ganz der Schriftstellerei. Er machte sich besonders durch folgende litterarhistorische Werke verdient: »Poets and poetry of America« (Philad. 1842; neueste Ausg. von Stoddard, 1873);
»Prose-writers of America« (neueste Ausg. 1866);
»Female poets of America« (1851, neueste Ausg. 1873) und »Poets and poetry of England in the ¶
mehr
nineteenth century« (4. Aufl. 1854). Mit Simms u. a. gab er ferner »Washington [* 3] and the generals of the American revolution« (1847, 2 Bde.),
mit Wallace »Napoleon and the marshalls of the Empire« (1847, 2 Bde.) heraus und schrieb: »Republican
court, or American society in the days of Washington« (New York 1854, mit vielen Illustrationen). Griswold
starb in
New York.
