James, Mediziner, geb. 1792 zu Deerneß auf den Orkneys, studierte seit 1807 in Edinburg, [* 2] praktizierte seit 1818 in London, [* 3] übernahm 1822 die Redaktion des »London Medical Repository« und starb Sein Hauptwerk ist das »Dictionary of practical medicine« (Lond. 1833-58, 4 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1865; deutsch von Kalisch, [* 4] Berl. 1834-59, 11 Bde.). Außerdem schrieb er: »Outlines of pathology and practical medicine« (Lond. 1822);
»Elements of physiology« (nach Richerand, das. 1824);
»On pestilential cholera« (das. 1832);
»On the diseases of warm climates« (mit Annesley, anonym);
»On palsy and apoplexy« (das. 1850);
»On consumption and bronchitis« (das. 1861).
