John, engl. Architekt und Altertumsforscher, geb. zu Kington in Wiltshire, war in seiner Jugend eine Zeitlang Kellerbursche, dann Schreiber bei einem Advokaten, bildete sich aber durch Selbstunterricht und Reisen.
