Annapolis. 1846-49 war er amerik. Gesandter in
London,

Verträge zur Regelung der
Staatsangehörigkeit der Auswanderer waren (s.
Bancroft-Verträge).
Seit Juli 1874 lebte er im Winter zu

(Rhode-Island). Er starb zu Washington. Seine erste histor. Arbeit, die Übersetzung von Heerens «Ideen über Politik», erschien 1824. 1834 folgte Bd. 1 seines Lebenswerkes: «The history of the United States», 1874 Bd. 10, der die Geschichte bis zur Unabhängigkeitserklärung führt (deutsch Lpz. 1845-75). Ein Supplement: «History of the Formation of the Constitution of the United States» (2 Bde., Neuyork [* 8] 1882),
geht bis 1789. Das Werk (6 Bde., Neuyork 1885; Luxusausg.
ebd. 1892) ist bedeutend durch die Materialsammlung. Bancroft
schrieb ferner: «The Bank of the United States» (1831),
«The documentary history of the revolution» (1835),
«The Necessity, the Reality and the Promise of the Human Race» (1845),
«Literary and historical Miscellanies» (1855),
«A plea for the constitution of the United States» (1886);
Reden auf Andrew Jackson und Abraham Lincoln.
Nach seinem Tode gab Dyer heraus «History of the Battle of Lake Erie, and miscellaneous papers,
and Life and writings of G. Bancroft»
