(spr. bálfor), 1) John Hunton, Botaniker, geb. studierte zu Edinburg, [* 2] wurde 1841 Professor der Botanik in Glasgow, [* 3] 1845 in Edinburg und zugleich Sekretär [* 4] der Royal Society daselbst;

2) Francis Maitland, Zoolog, geb. 1851 zu Edinburg, studierte in Cambridge Zoologie, wurde daselbst Fellow am Trinity College; verunglückte am Montblanc. Seine Arbeiten bewegten sich auf dem Gebiet der Embryologie der Wirbeltiere, für welche er viele schätzbare Beiträge lieferte, so besonders seine Untersuchung über die Entwickelungsgeschichte [* 5] der Haifische: »On the development of elasmobranch fishes« (Lond. 1878). Außerdem erschienen von ihm: »Studies from the morphological laboratory in Cambridge« (Lond. 1880-82, 2 Bde.);
»Treatise on comparative embryology« (1880-82, 2 Bde.; deutsch von Vetter, Jena [* 6] 1880-82).
