Sir John Gardner, berühmter Ägyptolog, geb. zu Hardendale in Westmoreland, erhielt seine Bildung zu Harrow und Oxford [* 2] am Exeter College und verweilte dann längere Zeit in Ägypten, [* 3] wo er sich dem eingehendsten Studium der Altertümer des Landes widmete. Seine erste und bedeutendste Veröffentlichung war das reich illustrierte Werk über ägyptische Kunst: »Manners and customs of the ancient Egyptians etc.« (Lond. 1837-41, 5 Bde.; neue Ausg. von S. Birch, 1878, 3 Bde.);
ihm folgten: »Modern Egypt and Thebes« (das. 1844, 2 Bde.);
»Architecture of ancient Egypt« (das. 1850, mit Atlas); [* 4]
»Popular account of the ancient Egyptians« (das. 1854, neue Ausg. 1871);
»Egypt in the times of the Pharaohs« (das. 1857) und viele Aufsätze in dem Journal der Londoner Geographical Society.
