Godwin
,
George, engl. Architekt und Kunstschriftsteller, geb. zu Brompton (Middlesex), wählte als Sohn eines Architekten dessen Beruf und erhielt schon 1835 vom Institut der britischen Architektur einen Preis für eine bauwissenschaftliche Schrift. Drei Jahre später gab er ein Werk über die Kirchen Londons heraus und wurde 1839 einer der Gründer der Art Union in London. Sehr geschätzt sind auch seine übrigen bauwissenschaftlichen Werte, namentlich: «History in ruins» (1853),
«London shadows» (1854) und einige andre, sowie seine Beiträge zum «Civil Enginees and Architects Journal» und zum «Art Journal». Seit 1844 ist er Hauptredakteur der für die Baukunst sehr wichtigen Zeitschrift «The Builder». Als praktischer Architekt bewährte er sich in der Erbauung der Kirchen St. Mary in West Brompton, St. Juda und St. Lucas in South Kensington und in der Restauration der Kirche St. Mary Redcliffe in Bristol. G. ist Vicepräsident der Gesellschaft der englischen Architekten. ¶
